John Kingsbury

John has been involved with Woking Conservatives for many years and has served two terms as Chairman and also Chairman of the Fundraising Committee. He remains Chairman of the Constituency’s successful Blue Ribbon Patron’s Club which he helped to establish.John has lived in and been involved with the Woking community all his life. He is a Governor of Brookwood School and a fundraiser for several local charities including the Royal British Legion where he is Vice-Chairman of the Bisley, Knaphill and West End Branch.

John’s career was spent with the UK building and civil engineering contractor, Costain Group, where he became Group Treasurer and a Foundation Fellow of his professional body, the Association of Corporate Treasurers. This business background has served him well in his responsibility for the Council’s Finance portfolio since May 2007 and subsequently Leader of the Council since 2008.

Since May 1999 John has represented St. Johns and Hook Heath on Woking Council, and has served as; Vice Chairman of the Council’s Executive, Chairman of the former Economic Committee, and as a member of the Social, Overview & Scrutiny, and Licensing Committees.  John represented the Council on the South-East Regional Assembly and was a member of the Woking Committee of Borough and County Councillors dealing with transport issues.

In May 2006, John was elected Mayor of Woking. He and the Mayoress, his long-term partner Linda Kemeny, attended over 500 functions and raised over £56,000 for his chosen charity ‘Supporting Younger People With Dementia’ on behalf of the Woking Branch of the Alzheimer's Society.
